More space for cyclists and pedestrians in busy inner cities

March 16, 2021

Cities continue to grow and, as a result, city centers are becoming increasingly crowded. Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and other cities are struggling with lack of space in the city center. Because they take up little space, bicycles are seen as the solution to the lack of space, and by now there are already more cyclists and pedestrians than motorists in these inner cities. But despite the fact that the number of cyclists is going in the right direction, the lack of space has not yet been solved, which is why more and more municipalities are choosing to encourage cycling even further. In doing so, they are looking at reallocating space in the inner cities, prioritizing cyclists and pedestrians while striving for safe infrastructure. By constructing attractive and safe bicycle routes and facilitating convenient bicycle parking, municipalities encourage the use of bicycles over cars.

Amsterdam has been a bicycle city for years and Amsterdam residents collectively own over a million bicycles. As a matter of policy, the City of Amsterdam gives priority to cyclists and pedestrians in busy places where there is no room for either cyclists or pedestrians or cars. When developing new areas, the city always examines how the bicycle contributes to a livable and accessible city. In addition to the goals of comfortable cycling and easy bicycle parking, the municipality of Amsterdam focuses on measures that improve cycling and cycling behavior. One of the measures that Amsterdam's local authority is trying out is reducing waiting times at traffic lights, allowing the huge amount of cyclists to pass through more quickly.

For the benefit of optimal infrastructure, Multisensors can contribute by providing real accurate bicycle data. This allows municipalities to make well-founded policy choices regarding a safe bicycle network. In addition, using the i-Signum, a link can be made with the iVRI (intelligent traffic control installation) for cyclists in order to promote the flow of bicycles.
