Review of Mobility Congress 2023: The Future of Mobility and Bicycle Counts

Oct. 9, 2023

On June 8, Eindhoven was the vibrant setting of the Mobility Congress 2023. The Municipality of Eindhoven acted as host and numerous speakers shared their vision on the future of mobility. From the Fietsersbond to the GVB, NS to various companies, consultants and municipalities; all contributed to this inspiring day. One of the highlights was the introductory speech by Geert Kloppenburg, an expert on innovation and mobility, who presented his vision of the future of mobility. As a bonus, he treated attendees to a copy of his book "The Golden Highway," which he co-wrote with Marc Buiter.

We may also offer this book to our readers on behalf of Geert Kloppenburg through his website. In "The Golden Highway," Kloppenburg highlights the inextricable interconnectedness of different transportation systems and shares his ideas on how mobility can be designed in innovative ways. Although this booklet does not specifically address bicycle counts and their analysis, we see it as an essential part of a comprehensive vision of mobility.

During the congress, Kloppenburg handed out his book ''The Golden Highway'' to attendees. Fortunately, you can use our link you can still download this book for free!

Bicycle Counts: An Underexposed Aspect of Mobility

In light of the future mobility vision and approach, road safety and infrastructure investment are critical. However, we question whether bicycle counts receive sufficient attention in the broader conversation about bicycle use. Often the choice of type of bicycle count (such as with a count tube, loop, radar/lidar, or manual) is not consciously made. The duration of counts can also vary. Temporary counts often do not provide sufficient insight into weather effects or changes in speed and type of vehicles.

In many larger cities, permanent measurements are taken, allowing for timely adjustments. Especially now that we want to encourage cycling, however, counts are becoming increasingly important. They serve as baseline measurements through which investments in bicycle infrastructure can be evaluated and adjusted on a permanent basis.

MultiSensors plans to provide even more advice on which application of bicycle racks will give the best results in different situations. We invite you to inquire with us about which application is most suitable for your needs and the budget involved.

Your Opinion Counts!

Now it's your turn to join the conversation. What are your views on how bicycle counts are conducted and analyzed? We believe your insights are invaluable in shaping the mobility of the future. Together, we can work toward safer and more efficient transportation systems that improve people's lives and contribute to a more sustainable society. Let us know what you think and let's create a positive impact together!
