Need for short-term bicycle counts.

November 23, 2020

Cycling is at the center of attention. Increasing congestion in inner cities and on access roads, combined with new forms of cycling such as the e-bike and speed pedelec, mean that people are increasingly taking to their bikes. The increasingly busy bike lanes require their own traffic management and expansion of the bike lane network.

To accurately align their policies with actual daily use of bike lanes, municipalities and counties need accurate actual bicycle data and preferably from multiple locations. A permanent bicycle set measurement system has been installed at several measurement locations. In addition, governments use field workers who conduct manual bicycle counts for a short period of several hours to still generate some bicycle data at other locations.

The demand for such temporary location measurements is growing. In addition to the need for insight into bicycle data from multiple locations, for example, a road diversion and what effect this has on the traffic on the bicycle path may be a reason for a short-term measurement. Or municipalities may want to commission short-term bicycle counts to combine generated bicycle data over multiple locations with available floating data.

The Signum is a semi-permanent solution and can easily be deployed at any location for a short period of time. In this way, actual data can be collected 24/7 regarding the number of vehicles on the bicycle path, bicycle direction, speeds and times with an accuracy of more than 95%, even during peak hours.
